E-learning philosophy: As a teacher/mentor, I am always looking for ways to try unique methods & approaches to enhance the learning process. Whenever we have an e-learning day this year, I will almost certainly ask the students to engage in something that would be considered 'outside' the normal curriculum. In this way, I believe e-learning can take us on a slightly different 'adventure'. In addition to the above idea, I will also be asking the students to 'grade' the quality of the assignment given; that way, (as the 'gardener' I aim to be) I can get the proper feedback to see if it will be worth using again in the future.

For Thursday 2/6/20
7th Pre-Algebra: There are 50 lockers in a high school hallway that are all closed and are being used by 50 individual students. The first student goes and opens all the lockers. The second student goes to his locker and all the multiples of two… if the locker is open, he closes it; if it is closed, he opens it. The third student goes to her locker and follows the exact same pattern for all the multiples of three: she opens any locker that is closed and closes any that are open. This pattern is followed by every single one of the 50 students.
Based on that information, answer the following two questions: When that last student completes the task, which lockers will be open? Using that information, which lockers would be open if the hallway contained 100 lockers?
8th Algebra: I’d like you watch the following you tube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp6D-xhJr4A which is entitled, “Nature by Numbers’ (3:44 long). Carefully summarize it and then tell me your reaction to it. After you have done that, go back to YouTube and find one other short video about math & nature. Write down the title, time length, etc. and summarize that video.
8th English: Since next Tuesday we will be looking at more lyrics of a song, today will be a primer…
Go to You Tube and watch the music video by a guy named Avicii (pronounced ah-vee-chee) entitled ‘Wake Me Up’. Copy the lyrics below and active read them like it is a Socratic Circle poem. (As you can well imagine, there is some real depth here. So, if it seems easy, you better get your shovel out!) In addition to that, cover the following topics (and anything else you feel is relevant): What do you think is the meaning of the tattoo symbol the people have in the video? Describe the physical appearance of the two distinct groups in the video. What false impression might that detail give?
Wake Me Up (by Avicii)
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well, life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well, that's fine by me
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
8th Lit: Read at least 30 minutes of your new book for the next letter-essay.
8th History: Something unique today. A few decades ago, a famous musician by the name of Billy Joel recorded a song crammed full of American history. The name of the song is "We Didn't Start the Fire".
Your assignment is as follows: first, go to youtube and watch the video of the song. Then, see if you can find out why Billy Joel decided to write the song in the first place. After that, find the lyrics to the song and divide the things he sings about into two separate categories: those that you knew about (either from our USHistory class or on your own) and those that you never heard of. (Some kids have printed off the lyrics and then highlighted what they knew as one color and what they didn’t as another color.)
Music- I forwarded your parents an assignment sent from Mrs. Werling.
